又 vs 再 Explained + Why Chinese People Always Say “Just One More Episode” | HSK 3

In today’s episode, we break down one of the most confusing but most common grammar points for HSK3 learners: 又 (yòu) vs 再 (zài). Both are translated as “again” in English, but in Mandarin they are used very differently depending on time.

You’ll learn how to talk naturally about actions that happened again in the past, and actions you plan or expect to do again in the future. This distinction is essential for sounding clear and natural in everyday Chinese.

But that’s not all
We also dive into a very real part of modern Chinese life: the “再看一集” (“just one more episode”) culture. From long TV dramas to short videos and mini-dramas, we explore why people always say they’ll stop watching… and then end up watching more. If you’ve ever said “just one more”, this episode will feel very familiar

What You’ll Learn in This Episode:
✅ The difference between 又 (past repetition) and 再 (future repetition)
✅ How to choose the right word based on time and context
✅ Common mistakes learners make with 又 and 再
✅ Real-life examples you can use immediately
✅ Cultural insight into binge-watching habits in China

Cultural Note:
In China, phrases like 再看一集 (“watch one more episode”) or 再刷一下 (“scroll a bit more”) are everywhere. With short video apps and mini-dramas, stopping is often harder than starting.

Question for You:
How would you say in Chinese: “I want to watch it one more time”?
Write your answer in the comments and we’ll check it.

Mini Challenge:
Create your own sentence using 又 or 再. For example:
他昨天又迟到了。
(He was late again yesterday.)

我们下次再见。
(We’ll meet again next time.)

[00:00:00] Speaker A: Foreign. I will just watch one more episode the tempting shorts drama. [00:00:23] Speaker B: Again and again. What's the difference? [00:01:46] Speaker A: Ma, jintian, Melanie and Vicky are chatting about travel experiences and future plans. Vicky. [00:03:30] Speaker B: Dai tree. So let's get started with the grammar point so so both and means again but they point to different times. [00:04:33] Speaker A: So use when the action has already happened again. Think of as looking back at the past. Here are some examples from the dialogue. I looked at some photos again after I came back. [00:04:59] Speaker B: Let's see more examples. He was late again today. After it rained, it became cold again. [00:05:18] Speaker A: Okay, now let's move to so use when the action hasn't happened yet but you plan or want to do it again, think of as looking forward. Here are some examples from the dialogue. If time and money allow, I want to go again next year. If it works out, I might want to go again after I come back. [00:05:58] Speaker B: And let's dive into more examples. Let's meet again next time when we have time. I want to think about this problem again. [00:06:18] Speaker A: So if you remember just one thing from this section Remember the time direction exactly. [00:06:26] Speaker B: So looking back at the time use but looking forward to the future use Once this clicks, your Chinese would sound much more natural. [00:06:38] Speaker A: Wow. Thank you Vicky. So good conclusion. Okay, so it's your turn. I forgot my phone again this morning so I went back home tonight I want to review the lesson again. [00:06:59] Speaker B: Try to combine both ideas into one smooth sentence. We'll give you the answer later in the episode. [00:07:07] Speaker A: Okay, now let's move back to our dialogue. Please pay attention to and. Vicky, didn't you go to the US last year? What impression did that trip leave on you? [00:07:39] Speaker B: It left a strong impression. I was a bit nervous the first time but I slowly got used to it. [00:07:56] Speaker A: That sounds like a good experience. Did you think about that trip again after coming back? [00:08:10] Speaker B: Of course. After I came back, I looked at some photos again and really miss it. [00:08:23] Speaker A: Looking at photos really makes people want to go again. Yeah. [00:08:39] Speaker B: So I have already started planning. If time and money allows, I want to go again next year. [00:09:00] Speaker A: That's great. I wasn't so lucky. I planned to go to Japan last year But I was too busy and didn't make it. [00:09:14] Speaker B: That's a pity. But it's okay. There will be opportunities in the future. They are. [00:09:31] Speaker A: Exactly. So I've decided I must go this year and if it works out, I might want to go again after I come back. [00:09:44] Speaker B: That the term of traveling? [00:09:48] Speaker A: Yes, it is. [00:09:50] Speaker B: So are you enjoying this episode? Thanks for being here. With our classes, you can make even more Progress. So find everything on. Or you can scan the QR right here on this page. [00:10:11] Speaker A: Yes. Okay, now let's move on today's cultural topic. Have you ever told yourself oh, just watch one more episode. [00:10:28] Speaker B: Yes. Then suddenly it's 2am so have you noticed that many mobile ads are nowadays are actually mini dramas? Yes. [00:10:42] Speaker A: So you're scrolling and suddenly there's a story. One minute long. Dramatic music, exaggerated acting. [00:10:52] Speaker B: Yeah, These are what we call in Chinese. So there are short dramas made especially for phones. [00:11:03] Speaker A: And each episode is very short, sometimes just one or two minutes. But the story is always cut at the most exciting moment. So that's why people always say watching, I'll just watch one episode. But the result is yearly Yokal Sanji ended up watching three episodes again. This. [00:11:34] Speaker B: Culture is everywhere in China. Not just TV series, but also short videos. [00:11:42] Speaker A: Right. People watch dramas on platforms like Iqiyi Tang Xin shi Pin Youku and short videos on Douyin or Kuaishou platforms. So one episode isn't enough. Once finished, just want to watch another one. [00:12:12] Speaker B: And the funny thing is people know what will happen. Like they even. [00:12:24] Speaker A: Wow, five minutes. It's so long. And this is not accidental. Ping tai shi ji. The platform design really plays a big role. Oh, that's very tricky. [00:12:46] Speaker B: Yes. For example, the next episode starts automatically. Or you don't even have to click. [00:12:55] Speaker A: Or the short videos just keep coming. One finishes, the next one starts. You don't have to make a decision at all. And the platform will do that for you. [00:13:09] Speaker B: Yes. So instead of saying I choose to watch again. It feels more like what's my. [00:13:18] Speaker A: Yo. Yo Yo. Exactly. So yeah, that's why yo. It's. You used so naturally here. Yo. Again. Again. Do I did it again? The action already happened again. [00:13:32] Speaker B: Often without planning and shows up before it happens. Like. [00:13:52] Speaker A: Accidentally watched a few more episodes again. [00:13:57] Speaker B: Yes. And this is why many just Chinese people says they don't lack self control. They like stop buttons. [00:14:08] Speaker A: It's not our fault, you know, in the platform. [00:14:12] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:14:17] Speaker A: So true. So this really shows how modern life works in China. Yeah. Fast con content, constant stimulation and very little pause. Is it really healthy? [00:14:37] Speaker B: Well, I think no. But what are you guys? What? What do you guys think about this culture? Have you ever experienced. Do you know the mini dramas? Have you ever seen the. You can leave in the comments your experience. So Emily, Melanie, I'm gonna ask you, have you ever seen watch? [00:15:02] Speaker A: Of course. Who doesn't like watching short dramas? [00:15:31] Speaker B: I know, I know. So well, let's move on to the answer. We earlier asked you to translate this sentence. I forgot my phone again this morning so I went back home tonight. I want to review the lesson again. [00:15:53] Speaker A: So one possible answer is. [00:16:10] Speaker B: Great job everyone. If you did it well, if not, it's okay. We'll be next time. [00:16:15] Speaker A: Keep trying. Now it's your turn. [00:16:24] Speaker B: So tell us in the comments. [00:16:31] Speaker A: So watch. [00:16:33] Speaker B: What were you watching and how many episodes did you actually watch? [00:16:40] Speaker A: It's a secret. Okay, so in your sentences.
